MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers)

Being involved in MOPS over the past 9 years has changed my life, literally. I believe that no mother of preschoolers should be without a group of Christian mothers to support her. When I first joined the group, I was a new mother who lacked confidence in her current role. I was seeking friends, mentors, and spiritual fulfillment. MOPS provided me with all of these and so much more. Through our group discussions, presentations, and exposure to God’s word, I became a better mother, wife, and friend to my most loved ones. Later, through my role on the MOPS steering team, I developed skills in leadership, speaking, presentation, and facilitating group discussion. I learned how to encourage and equip other new moms, just as I had been encouraged when I first joined. I learned to delegate tasks and know when to take a step back and let go of the reins. I learned how to pray confidently, sincerely, and publicly. Most importantly, I have matured in my faith and learned to walk with the Lord in a close relationship with Him. As a result, my whole family has been attending church regularly for several years, and my husband and I were baptized together last Easter. The road is sometimes bumpy, but overall, it has been a joyful and fabulous journey, which still continues. And our family continues to be blessed at every turn. — Suzanne Forte

When my son was born, I never anticipated the flood of emotions, both good and not-so-good, that would accompany becoming a mother. I struggled to find balance in my life and marriage after deciding to stay home to raise my son, and lacked a loving and accepting outlet through which I could grow as a Christian wife and mom. Where could I meet other women who wouldn’t judge me or want to compare children and lives? Where could I learn how to nurture my changing marriage and growing child? Would I always feel like I was just surviving each day with my little one? And where was God in all of this upheaval in my life?

It was at this point that I was introduced to MOPS. I couldn’t believe how open and accepting everyone was! I admit, for the first year I laid low and just soaked in the down time, adult conversation and simple break from routine. I made a friend or two, but mostly kept to myself. In my second year I became more active and involved, reaching out and sharing myself more with others. It was at that point that deeper friendships developed and I started to really grow as a person. It was also at this point that I noticed my marriage taking on a new life and my relationship with God growing, too! Now, as I near the end of my third year in MOPS I play an active role in MOPS Leadership and have thriving friendships that literally carry me through the ups and downs of family life. My marriage is stronger than ever, and the time spent with my MOPS ladies leaves me fulfilled, recharged and ready to embrace whatever lies ahead. — Meg Whitbeck MS RD CDN

I have been a MOPS mom for the last 12 years and I honestly cannot imagine how I would have been as a mother without it. The support you receive from the other moms and the mentor is so important as you go through those difficult early mothering years. MOPS teaches you that God loves and cares for you personally, and that He is with you through this experience, not only as a mom but also in your relationships with others, and your marriage.

Because of this, the most important thing that MOPS has given me is a personal relationship with Jesus. It has affected my life and my parenting in so many ways. I always had a faith in Jesus but never understood that I could have a relationship with Him. I am a different person now than when I started MOPS and have grown in ways that I could have never imagined before. My relationship with Jesus is priceless and will carry me and stay with me throughout my life, and I have my time at MOPS to thank for that. — Mary Borges
